:: REMEMBER TIANANMEN ::
Twenty Years After June 4th – Memorial & Open Discussion
June 3rd @ McGill University, Student Centre (3480 MacTavish)
Film & Discussion 17h
Memorial 14h – 19h
:: BACKGROUND ::
We are organising a memorial event for the 20th anniversary of the events of June 4th, 1989 (in Tiananmen Square).
It’s not a protest, but rather a sort of discussion starter. As young Chinese Montrealers, we realised that there’s little public acknowledgment or awareness of the events in question. As it has now been 20 years, we would like to start a discussion.
We will screen “Sunrise over Tiananmen Square,” Shuibo Wang’s award-winning animated short film. Having lived in China from the Mao era until 1989, the film provides a valuable, indigenous perspective. The film is emotionally engaging and visually adventurous.
We will give a short brief to contextualise the events of 1989, and to sketch the impact it has had on Chinese society, as evidence by the last 20 years.
We welcome young and old to share their stories about the spring of 1989 beyond Beijing — to share about the fundraising efforts, political activity and conversations that took place in Montreal, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and elsewhere.
We will finish with a public memorial gesture. We invite participants to remember all Chinese who lost their lives that summer in the dream of a better future.
